HOW TO GET YOUR GLOW ON

Highlighters are your makeup bag’s necessity.

Regardless of whether I’m going for coffee or attending a more formal event, my highlight is always applied before I leave the house. Yes. I’m highlight obsessed. Looking at my collection right now, I have 13 highlighters, and I recently did a clear out. I’ve tested a lot, made A LOT of mistakes and have only recently found my highlighting technique.

Through all of this, I have learned to love so many products on the highlighting market. Between liquids, powders, or creams- there are a tonne of different formulas to give you that glow of your dreams. It’s up to you what kind of finish you want, whether that’s a full beam highlight or a more subtle glow.

Choose your highlighter.

You need to figure out which formula works best for you and your skin type. Recently I’ve been really into the powder highlighters, like this one from YSL or this one from theBalm. They melt into my skin and give it a very natural type of finish.

Depending on the type of skin you have, sometimes that extra bit of shine isn’t what you’re going for. For example, if your skin is on more of the oily side (like me!), powder highlighters are generally the way to go. If you have combo skin, a cream highlighter would be great like this one from Fenty Beauty, and if you have dry skin- try a liquid highlighter like this one from Jeffree Star!

Find your shade.

There are so many shades and reflects to play with when it comes to highlight. Some are golden, some are more iridescent or pinky, and I even have one with rainbow undertones. It all depends on your skin tone and what type of look you’re going for. Personally, I like to play around with the more iridescent and pink shades during the summer to show off my tan. I then utilize the more bronze and golden highlighters to warm up my face during the winter. Mac Extra Dimension Finish is a personal favorite of mine! I have it in the shade Show Gold, which is a peach tone that breaks pink! Super pretty.

Know where to put it.

We’ve come a long way since the highlighting boom a few years ago…. When we strobed our faces to our hearts content, and diminished any need for contouring. Luckily that trend has died and gone, but we continue to glow up our cheekbones in the hopes of looking effortlessly flawless. Thanks to the help of YouTube beauty gurus I now have learned to apply not only to my cheekbones, but on the bridge of my nose, the inner corners of my eyes, my cupid’s bow- and even my décolletage if I’m wearing something low cut. (MAC Strobe cream is actually perfect for this!)

Application Tools.

This is a simple one for me, when I’m applying my powder highlighter, I’ll use a fluffy brush like this one to apply. Otherwise I’ll just use my fingers for creams and liquids, I find it easier and even quicker to blend out then using a beauty blender or brush.
